16, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College men's swim team improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference with a 140-47 win over visiting Ursinus today at Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen took first place in all but one event. Junior Alex Kuhn (Washington, PA/McGuffey), sophomore Ken Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), and freshman Andy Wesolek (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) each won two individual events for the Shoremen. Kuhn won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:35.52, finishing more than 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Kuhn also took first in the 500 freestyle in 5:19.63. Jensen won the 1000 freestyle in 11:32.55 and the 100 butterfly in 58.01. Wesolek captured first place in the 50 freestyle in 21.95 and in the 100 backstroke in 55.10. Senior J.C. Cronin (Newark, DE/Newark) and junior Dwayne Yerger (Naples, FL/Hill School) each added one first-place finish. Cronin won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.32, while Yerger won the 100 freestyle in 55.94. Individual second-place finishes came from Cronin in the 500 freestyle (5:27.64), senior Pat Cline (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) in the 100 butterfly (59.68), junior Tyler Lowry (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) in the 100 freestyle (1:03.65), sophomore Conor Caporale (Laguna Niguel, CA/Dana Hills) in the 100 backstroke (1:11.04), and freshman Shane Walsh (Mitchelville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.49). In the relay events, the Shoremen took first and second in the 200 medley and first in the 200 freestyle. The winning medley team consisted of Wesolek, Kuhn, Cline, and Yerger and finished in 1:48.58, while the second-place team of Walsh, senior John Dolan (Millsboro, DE/St. Andrew's School), freshman Dean Campbell (La Plata, MD/La Plata), and junior Justin Smith (Yardley, PA/George School) finished in 1:59.06, less than two-tenths of a second ahead of the Ursinus team. Winning the freestyle relay were Cline, Cronin, Yerger, and Caporale in 1:38.09. The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. home meet against Widener. |
