2008 OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Senior forward Tony Armiger (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) scored the game-winning goal with 51 seconds left in regulation to give visiting Washington College a 2-1 win over host Stevenson University in the men's soccer season opener for both schools this afternoon in Owings Mills, MD. Washington got on the board at the 21:30 mark as freshman defender/midfielder Jordan Haas (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) scored off a double assist from freshman midfielder Colin Kidwell (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) and junior defender Tom Heppard (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown). Heppard sent a free kick to Kidwell who headed to ball to Haas. Haas then booted the ball into the lower right corner from 10 yards out. Neither team scored again until Stevenson evened the match at 72:03 when Kyle Baker sent in a ball off the crossbar after taking a feed from John Adamo. Armiger's game-winner came when he headed in a cross from senior midfielder Conor Halesworth (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) at 89:09. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made six saves in his collegiate debut for the Shoremen, while Stevenson goalkeeper Adam Wiatrowski also made six stops. Each team had 12 shots in the game, while Stevenson held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game at 22nd-ranked Salisbury.
