Shoremen Garner First All-Time Win Over Mules

ALLENTOWN, PA -- Sophomore midfielder Gavin Rayburn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and senior forward Brian Schultz (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) and each netted a goal in a 43-second stretch of the second half as visiting Washington College earned its first all-time win against host Muhlenberg, with a 2-1 triumph in a Centennial Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Allentown, PA. The Shoremen improve to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Mules fall to 7-4-1 and 2-2-1 respectively. After a scoreless first half, Rayburn netted the opening goal of the match at 55:09 when his long shot went over the head of Muhlenberg goalkeeper Joseph Gogel and into the net to give the Shoremen a 1-0 lead. Washington would strike 43 seconds later when Gogel lost the ball right in front of Schultz. Schultz then pounced on the ball and put it into the goal to make it 2-0. The Mules would get onto the board at the 85:07 mark when Eric Miller converted a Cody Antonini cross to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Mules were unable to get the equalizer and the Shoremen held on for the breakthrough victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper James Bedrock (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) made five saves in the win for Washington, while Gogel stopped four shots for Muhlenberg. The Mules outshot the Shoremen by a 17-11 margin and held an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.

The Shoremen return to action Tuesday night with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest versus visiting Delmarva rival Wesley.
