27, 2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Twentieth-ranked Johns Hopkins scored what would prove to be the difference-maker in the 53rd minute of a 2-1 Centennial Conference men's soccer victory over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Blue Jays, who will be the second seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Playoffs, improved to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen finish their season at 6-11 and 1-8. Chand Balfour put Hopkins on the board by booting in a shot by Scott Bukoski that went off a Washington defender at the 5:40 mark. Washington tied the score with a goal in the 23rd minute. Junior forward Tony Armiger (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) crossed the ball from the left corner to the top of the box, where junior forward Brian Schultz (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) headed the ball to a sprinting senior midfielder Frank Borelli (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional), who booted the ball into the lower left corner from 15 yards out at 22:13. The score remained knotted at 1-1 as the teams went into halftime. Hopkins held a 12-3 advantage in shots in the first half. Hopkins took the lead when Balfour fired a shot that went back into play after a save by WC senior goalkeeper Marc Petrucci (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) and was then fired into the goal by David Drake at 52:39. The Blue Jays held a 28-7 advantage in shots for the game and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Matt Mierley made two saves for Hopkins, while Petrucci finished with nine saves for the Shoremen.
