Danver's Penalty Kick Accounts For Lone Goal

WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- Junior midfielder Brian Danver (Bethany Beach, NJ/St. Albans, DC) netted the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick as Washington College downed Alfred, 1-0, in the opening round of the Lycoming College River Kickoff Classic at Lycoming College Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Shoremen were awarded the penalty kick in the 77th minute when senior midfielder Frank Borelli (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional) was taken down in the box by a Saxon player.

"Our defensive shift and organization was really good," said head coach Drew Hoffman, who is now 2-0 in season openers at Washington. "Our midfield worked really hard and covered a lot of a lot of ground in the middle."

Senior goalkeeper Marc Petrucci (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) recorded his seventh career shutout for Washington. He made seven saves in the game, including a couple key stops to preserve the shutout.

Washington held a 14-7 advantage in shots in the game and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The Shoremen return to action Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. game against host Lycoming. Lycoming downed Marywood 4-1 in the other game.
