2006 BALTIMORE, MD -- Eleventh-ranked host Johns Hopkins University held off visiting Washington College, 2-1, in a Centennial Conference men's soccer game tonight at Homewood Field in Baltimore. The Blue Jays improved to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in Centennial play and clinched the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament with the win. The Shoremen slipped to 8-7 and 2-6 with the loss. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead when Max Venker scored off an assist from Nicholas Gauna at the 27:37 mark. The score remained 1-0 until halftime. Johns Hopkins made it 2-0 when Gauna redirected a Moath Hamzeh crossing pass at the 54:04 mark. The Shoremen got on the board shortly thereafter as senior forward Josh Todd (Crisfield, MD/Crisfield) scored on a low shot into the lower left corner past a diving Hopkins goalkeeper Danny Coble at 56:17. The goal ended Coble's Centennial Conference record shutout streak at 1010:37. Coble's streak was the third-longest in Division III history. Washington's final shot came at 76:31 when senior midfielder Jordan Lange (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) sent one wide. Coble made three saves in the game for Hopkins. Washington junior goalkeeper Marc Petrucci (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) made eight stops for the Shoremen. The Blue Jays outshot the Shoremen 31-7 and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Shoremen close out their 2006 season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
