2006 WASHINGTON, DC -- Visiting Washington College scored once in each half in a 2-0 men's soccer win over host Catholic University this afternoon in Washington, DC. The Shoremen, who picked up their fourth shutout win in their last five games, improved to 8-5 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 4-8-2. Sophomore midfielder Conor Halesworth (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) broke a scoreless tie for the Shoremen by booting in a ball that shot back out into the box at the 43:31 mark. The Shoremen pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 79:31 mark on the first collegiate goal for junior midfielder/forward Gabe Dopazo (Washington, DC/Winston Churchill, MD). Sophomore midfielder/forward Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) played the ball out of the corner to junior midfielder Frank Borelli (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional) who tapped the ball to Dopazo. Dopazo then found the back of the net for the score. Kielek and Borelli were awarded assists on the play; Kielek's was the first of his collegiate career. Washington junior goalkeeper Marc Petrucci (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) made seven saves in his sixth solo shutout of the season. Joe Schettino made six saves for Catholic in the loss. Catholic held a 13-12 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks in the game. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin & Marshall.
