Mustangs Stop Shoremen, 1-0
Ferri Makes Seven Saves in Loss

STEVENSON, MD -- Villa Julie midfielder Craig Nearhood netted a goal on a clear shot outside the top of the box late in the second half to lead the host Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over Washington College in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday in Stevenson, MD.

The Shoremen (0-4) outshot the Mustangs, 14-5, in the first half. With five seconds left in the half, WC junior midfielder Dave Hieber (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) was fed a pass from sophomore midfielder Frank Borelli (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional) and was fouled in the box while dribbling towards the net. However, Hieber went on to miss the penalty shot opportunity wide right.

Washington had many chances to take a lead in the second half, but it was Villa Julie (2-1-1) who ultimately converted. In the 80th minute, Nearhood slipped a shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net past WC junior goalkeeper Sean Ferri (Northport, NY/Kings Park) for the first and only goal of the contest.

Ferri made seven saves in the loss for the Shoremen, who held a 24-10 advantage in shots in the game. Eric Lowman made 10 saves for Villa Julie.

The Shoremen open Centennial Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Ursinus for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
