29, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's soccer team fell to 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 3-2, this afternoon in a Centennial Conference game at Kibler Field. Hopkins (13-2-1, 6-2 Centennial Conference) clinched a berth in the conference playoffs with the win. The Shoremen fell to 8-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play with the loss. Washington got on the board first when junior midfielder/forward Tom Baker (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) beat a Hopkins defender and sent a goal into the opposite corner of the net at 11:32. Hopkins tied things up on an unassisted goal by Moath Hanzeh at 32:04 and took the lead when Chad Tarabolous scored on a penalty kick at 41:03. The Shoremen evened the score at 2-2 in the second half when Baker scored off an assist from junior midfielder Justin Layfield (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) on an indirect kick at 67:04. Tarabolous scored the game-winner at 69:39 on the Blue Jays' second penalty kick of the game. That penalty kicked was awarded when Baker received a red card for stopping a Hopkins shot inside the box with his hand. Washington played the final 20:21 a man down. The game featured the top two goalkeepers in the Centennial Conference in save percentage and goals-against average this season - Washington junior Ryan Miller (Bel Air, MD/Fallston) and the Blue Jays' Gary Kane, Jr. Miller made nine saves in the contest, while Kane made one. Hopkins held a 12-4 advantage in shots and a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Shoremen close out their 2003 regular season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home game against McDaniel.
