18, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's soccer team defeated Gettysburg College for the first time in 43 years this afternoon, pulling off a 1-0 win over the Bullets at Kibler Field. The Bullets (9-4, 4-2 Centennial) had been unbeaten in their last 12 games against the Shoremen, posting an 11-0-1 record against Washington (7-4-2, 3-2-1) in those contests. Gettysburg had been 10-0 in conference games against the Shoremen prior to today's game. Junior midfielder/forward Tom Baker (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored the game's only goal at 53:30. Baker beat Gettysburg goalkeeper Nick Wells-Bundtzen, who had come out of the goal, to the ball to knock in the score. Junior defender Jimmy Pope (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) sent the ball to Baker and picked up his first collegiate assist on the goal. Washington junior goalkeeper Ryan Miller (Bel Air, MD/Fallston) picked up his sixth shutout of the season in the win, making 12 saves and punching away numerous crosses. Gettysburg held a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Shoremen, who return to action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Villa Julie, last defeated Gettysburg in 1960, when they recorded a 6-0 triumph over the Bullets.
