31, 2002 HARRISONBURG, VA -- The Washington College men's soccer team clinched the title at the EMU Soccer Classic and improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater College this afternoon at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA. Junior forward/midfielder Geoff Foltyn (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 72:57 mark. The Shoremen appeared to get off to an early 1-0 lead, but an apparent goal by senior midfielder Tim Buckless (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was disallowed. Instead, Bridgewater (1-1) got on the board first on a goal by John Williamson at 26:46. The Shoremen tied it up with just over a minute remaining in the first half when senior back Steve Yurchak (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) found senior midfielder T.J. Velykis (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) for a goal at the 43:44 mark. Foltyn's game-winner was the only goal of the second period and came off an assist from sophomore midfielder Justin Layfield (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall). The goal was Foltyn's second in as many days, doubling his total from the 2001 season. WC sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Miller (Bel Air, MD/Fallston) turned in another solid performance in goal, making five saves. WC held a 15-14 edge in shots, while Bridgewater held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Washington finishes with a 2-0 record at the two-day pre-scheduled round robin tournament. Bridgewater wound up 0-2, while host Eastern Mennonite and McDaniel College each finished 1-1. The Shoremen return to action a week from tomorrow with their 1:00 p.m. home opener against Randolph-Macon. Box Score
