1, 2001 WAYNE, NJ -- The Washington College men's soccer team dropped its second straight close game to open the 2001 season today at William Patterson. The Shoremen (0-2) fell to the Pioneers (2-0) by a 3-2 count. Yesterday, the lost by an identical score at Montclair State in overtime. The Shoremen got on the board first, just 4:36 into the game when senior midfielder Chris Hastings (Glenelg, MD/River Hill) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT). WPU junior midfielder Mike Guerdat (Annandale, VT/W.T. Woodson) evened the score at the 35:37 mark when he headed in a lob from junior midfielder Jason Irizarry. The Pioneers took the lead for good on a penalty kick from senior forward Jon Russo (Middletown, NJ/CBA) at 60:11 and added another goal when Guerdat scored again at 74:40, this time off an assist from junior forward John Fornino (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills). The Shoremen cut the lead to one when junior midfielder T.J. Velykis (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) converted a penalty kick at 81:13. Washington returns to action Wednesday with its 4:00 p.m. home opener against Cabrini. Box Score
