11, 2001 STEVENSON, MD -- Despite digging themselves out of an early 2-0 hole, the Washington College Shoremen lost to host Villa Julie College, 3-2, this afternoon in non-conference play. The Shoremen fell to 1-10-1 overall with the loss, while the Mustangs improved to 4-9. Villa Julie wasted no time in building the 2-0 lead. Junior back Mike Petr (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) booted in an unassisted goal just 53 seconds into the game from near midfield. Petr scored again less than four minutes later off a pass from junior back Chad Clarke (Dundalk, MD/Patapsco) for the Mustangs' second goal in the first five minutes. The Shoremen battled back, holding Villa Julie scoreless the rest of the half and getting on the scoreboard at the 48:23 mark off a goal by freshman midfielder Justin Layfield (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall). Washington tied the score at 2-2 when junior midfielder T.J. Velykis (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) added a goal at 53:50. The game remained tied until the 74:30 mark when Mustang senior midfielder Brian Shepley (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) scored the game-winner. Washington suffered its sixth one-goal loss of the season despite holding a 17-10 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
