22, 2001 LANCASTER, PA -- The Washington College men's soccer team fell to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference with a 3-1 loss at Franklin & Marshall this afternoon. Freshman forward Justin Layfield (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) scored his first collegiate goal in the game for the Shoremen. Diplomat senior forward Scott Runyon (Hopatcong, NJ/Gill Saint Bernards) tallied a hat trick to account for all three Franklin & Marshall goals. His first goal came just 6:23 into tha game. Layfield scored his goal to even the score at the 24:17 mark. Senior midfielder Chris Hastings (Glenelg, MD/River Hill) picked up an assist on the goal. Runyon gave the Diplomats the lead for good with his second goal just over four minutes into the second half. Each of his first two goals were assisted by senior forward Matt Shapiro (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake). Shapiro's final goal came on a direct kick in the 78th minute. The Shoremen continue play in the Centennial Conference Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Johns Hopkins. Box Score
