PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Washington College men's rowing team competed at the Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta Saturday in near-freezing conditions. The Shoremen entered four boats in three competitions. Washington's entrant in the open double did not finish due to a collision.

The Shoremen had two boats in the open four with coxswain. The first Washington boat to cross the finish line in the event placed 17th of 29 in 16:02.95. Sophomore Nick Mikhalevsky (Arlington, VA/St. Andrew's School) served as the team's coxswain and was joined by senior Jonas Johnson (Atlanta, GA/Marist School) at stroke, junior Sean Askham (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) in the third seat, sophomore Greg Smith (Sykesville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) in the two seat, and sophomore Jonathan Lange (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) at bow. The other WC boat in the event finished 24th in 17:27.97.

In the novice four with coxswain, the Shoreman boat finished 13th in 19:50.13. Coxswain freshman Caryn Thomas was joined by freshman Travis Elliott at stroke, freshman Brian Matthews (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) in the three seat, freshman Brant Whisler in the two seat, and sophomore Greg Ordile at bow.

The Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is rowed over a 2.6 mile course on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The regatta attracts rowers from all over North America and has become one of the premier fall regattas in the nation, regarded by rowers as the climax of their fall racing season. The course twists and bends its way through some of America's most beautiful and historic parkland during the peak of the fall foliage.

The Shoremen return to action at the Keuper Cup Regatta in Melbourne, FL, on March 13.
