WC Lightweights, Novices Win at Occoquan Sprints

LORTON, VA -- The Washington College men's rowing team won two events at the Occoquan Sprints today in Lorton, VA. The Shoremen finished first of seven boats in the lightweight varsity four and first of 13 boats overall in the novice men's four. Washington's varsity four was also fourth of five boats in its heat.

Senior Ashleigh Genevich (Avon Grove, PA/Avon Grove) served as coxswain of the Shoremen's lightweight varsity four, which won its seven-boat race in 6:49.7, over eight seconds ahead of second-place American (6:58.0). Sophomore Brian Gamble (Gibson Island, MD/Holderness School, NH) sat stroke, senior Hugh McAdam (Hollis, NH/Worcester Academy) was in the three seat, sophomore R. Scott Jones (Maple Glen, PA/La Salle College HS) sat in the two seat, and junior Matt Icenroad (Sykesville, MD/Century) was the bow.

Freshman Eric Swenson (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) served as coxswain of the Shoremen's novice four, which won its four-boat heat in 7:00.5. Old Dominion (7:08.25) and Stetson (7:17.6) won the event's other two heats, giving the Shoremen the fastest overall time by 7.75 seconds. Freshman Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) sat stroke, freshman Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the three seat, freshman Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Ryan Beaston (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was the bow.

Sophomore Springer Harris (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity four, which was fourth in its five-boat heat in 7:17.00. George Mason won the heat in 6:45.5, posting the fastest time in either of the two varsity four heats. Junior Derek Trott (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) sat stroke, sophomore Dan Pierce (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) was in the three seat, sophomore Andrew Newell (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sat in the two seat, and freshman Jake Ludemann (Wilton, CT/St. Luke's) was the bow.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a home regatta against Franklin & Marshall.
