WC Lightweights Advance to Dad Vail Final
Lightweights Finish Fourth Overall, Novices Make Semifinals

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Washington College men's rowing team's lightweight four finished second in both its heat and its semifinal race before finishing fourth in the final for the James J. Lynch Trophy at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta held yesterday and today on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Shoremen's novice four advanced to the semifinals, where it finished third, at the regatta.

Washington's lightweight four qualified for the semifinals by finishing second in its heat in 6:30.056. Brock University won the heat in 6:25.909. Ohio State was third (6:45.804), Fordham was fourth (6:52.912), Boston College was fifth (7:11.596), and Cincinnati was sixth (7:16.958). The lightweights were second again in the semifinals in 6:26.373, trailing only Brock (6:23.025) for the second time in as many races. Virginia Tech was third (6:31.792), Fairfield was fourth (6:32.855), Ohio State was fifth (6:42.340), and Purdue was sixth (6:45.968). The Shoremen's fourth-place time in the James J. Lynch Trophy final was 6:42.109. Mercyhurst won the trophy in 6:26.758, while Brock was second in 6:31.670, and Santa Barbara was third in 6:33.765. Georgia Tech (6:45.191) was fifth, while St. Joseph's (6:50.178) was sixth.

Senior Ashleigh Genevich (Avon Grove, PA/Avon Grove) served as coxswain of the Shoremen's lightweight four. Senior Hugh McAdam (Hollis, NH/Worcester Academy) sat stroke, sophomore R. Scott Jones (Maple Glen, PA/La Salle College HS) was in the three seat, sophomore Brian Gamble (Gibson Island, MD/Holderness School, NH) sat in the two seat, and junior Matt Icenroad (Sykesville, MD/Century) was the bow.

The Shoremen's novice four qualified for the semifinals by finishing second in its heat in 6:44.806. Jacksonville won the heat in 6:42.336, while Rhode Island was third (7:07.046), Georgia was fourth (7:16.850), and Northwestern was fifth (7:18.239). In their semifinal, the novices were third in 6:40.234. First-place Temple (6:29.954) and second-place Colgate (6:32.134) advanced to the final. Long Beach (6:42.077) was fourth, UTC was fifth (6:43.913), and Dowling was sixth (6:49.077).

Freshman Eric Swenson (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) served as coxswain of the Shoremen's novice four. Freshman Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) sat stroke, freshman Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the three seat, freshman Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Ryan Beaston (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was the bow.
