WC Novice Eight Wins at Knecht Cup
Varsity Four Takes Second Place

CAMDEN, NJ -- The Washington College men's rowing team took first place in the Division II/III Novice Eight at the Knecht Cup, held Saturday and Sunday in Camden, NJ. The Shoremen also placed second in Division II/III Varsity Four.

Washington won the Division II/III Novice Eight in 7:11.2 Freshman Victoria Pace (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the Division II/III Novice Eight. Freshman Derek Trott (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) sat stroke, freshman Steve Reuter (Howard County, MD/Long Reach) was in the seven seat, freshman Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the six seat, freshman Zak Morey (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) sat in the five seat, freshman Clint McKee (Woodbine, MD/St. John's at Prospect Hall) was in the four seat, freshman Cole Eshbach (Columbia, PA/Columbia) sat in the three seat, freshman Will Bruce (Abington, PA/Abington) was in the two seat, and freshman Matt Icenroad (Sykesville, MD/Century) was the bow.

Washington posted the top time in all of the Division II/III Varsity Four heats, winning its heat in 7:47.5 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Washington finished in second in 7:27.0, 3.1 seconds behind first-place Kings Point. Senior Tom Murray (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) served as the coxswain for the Shoremen's boat in the Division II/III Varsity Four. Sophomore Hugh McAdam (Hollis, NH/Worcester Academy) sat stroke, senior Jason Brown (Baltimore, MD/Randallstown) was in the three seat, junior Andrew Bright (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha) sat in the two seat, and senior Mike Philipp (Newark, DE/Newark) was the bow.

Washington's varsity pair finished fourth in its heat in 7:33.5. That time was good enough for sixth overall in the heats and earned the Shoremen a spot in the finals. Washington finished sixth in the finals in 8:50.1. Junior Ryan Trone (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and sophomore Chris Broadwell (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) rowed in the Men's Pair for the Shoremen.

The Shoremen will split up next weekend - part of the team will row against Tufts, Bates, and Wesleyan in Boston Saturday, while the remaining part of the team will compete at the Johns Hopkins Invitational.
