Washington Wins Caspersen Cup
Shoremen Take First in Novice Eight

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Washington College men's rowing team won the novice eight and finished second in three other races as the Shoremen combined with the women's rowing team to take first place at the 13th Annual Caspersen Cup held this morning in Baltimore, MD. Washington finished the regatta with 53 total points, while Johns Hopkins was second with 50 and St. John's (MD) was third with 22.

The Shoremen's novice eight won in 6:00.45. St. John's was second in the race in 6:05.28. Freshman Victoria Pace (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the novice eight. Freshman Derek Trott (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) sat stroke, freshman Steve Reuter (Howard County, MD/Long Reach) was in the seven seat, freshman Will Bruce (Abington, PA/Abington) was in the six seat, freshman Zak Morey (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) sat in the five seat, freshman Clint McKee (Woodbine, MD/St. John's at Prospect Hall) was in the four seat, freshman Cole Eshbach (Columbia, PA/Columbia) sat in the three seat, sophomore Eric Abbott (Mt. Airy, MD/Queen Anne's County) was in the two seat, and freshman Matt Icenroad (Sykesville, MD/Century) was the bow.

Washington finished second in the men's varsity four by less than one second. Johns Hopkins won the race in 6:14.55, while the Shoremen finished in 6:15.44. Senior Tom Murray (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) served as the coxswain for the Shoremen's varsity four. Sophomore Hugh McAdam (Hollis, NH/Worcester Academy) sat stroke, senior Jason Brown (Baltimore, MD/Randallstown) was in the three seat, junior Andrew Bright (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha) sat in the two seat, and senior Mike Philipp (Newark, DE/Newark) was the bow.

The Shoremen were second in the varsity eight in 5:54.79. Johns Hopkins won the men's varsity eight. Murray served as coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity eight. McAdam sat stroke, Brown was in the seven seat, Bright sat in the six seat, Philipp was in the five seat, freshman Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the four seat, Trone sat in the three seat, Trott was in the two seat, and Broadwell was the bow.

Sophomore Chris Broadwell (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) and junior Ryan Trone (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) finished second for the Shoremen in the men's pair in 7:34.98. Johns Hopkins won the men's pair.

Washington head rowing coach Mike Davenport was pleased with today's races. Davenport was especially impressed by the novice rowers, noting, "Both the men's and women's novice eights did fantastic jobs - the best I've seen by our novices in 15 years. The women's varsity eight also did an excellent job."

"There were a lot of uncertainties going into today's race, but the kids did really well and it looks good for the future."

The Shoremen will row at the Occoquan Sprints tomorrow in Lorton, VA.
