Two Washington Fours
Row to Finals at Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, NJ -- The Washington College men's rowing team competed at the Knecht Cup, held yesterday and today in Camden, NJ. The Shoremen reached the finals in both the Men's Division II/III Varsity Four and in the Men's Novice Four.

The Shoremen's "A" boat finished second in its heat to earn a spot in the Men's Division II/III Varsity Four finals. The "A" boat was in fourth place 500 meters into the heat before passing NYU. Washington then passed SUNY-Geneseo with 200 meters left, to finish second by a boat-length in 8:44.20. The Shoremen finished fifth in the finals in 7:16.61. Mercyhurst won the finals of the Division II/III Varsity Four in 6:50.00.

The Shoremen's novice four won its heat by over six seconds, finishing in 7:30.70, while Wichita State's "A" boat was second in 7:36.90. The Shoremen were then second in the semifinal, finishing in 7:26.50, to advance to the grand finals. Wichita State's "A" boat won the Shoremen's semifinal in 7:23.20. The Shoremen were fifth in the grand finals in 7:28.37. New York Maritime won the grand finals of the Novice Four in 6:50.00

Washington's varsity four "B" boat was third in its heat in 9:09.90

Junior Tom Murray (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) served as coxswain of the varsity four "A" boat . Sophomore Andrew Bright (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha) sat stroke, junior Mike Philipp (Newark, DE/Newark) sat in the three seat, sophomore Adam Askham (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) was in the two seat, and junior Martin Dunphy (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) was the bow.

Freshman Meredith Weaver (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's novice four. Freshman Chris Broadwell (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) sat stroke, freshman Trent Cosentino (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's School) was in the three seat, junior Jason Brown (Baltimore, MD/Randallstown) was in the two seat, and freshman Hugh McAdam (Hollis, NH/Worcester Academy) was the bow.

Junior Amanda Whittemore (Media, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) was the coxswain of the varsity four "B" boat. Sophomore Jared Hornyak (Trenton, NJ/Hamilton) sat stroke, sophomore Ryan Trone (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) was in the three seat, freshman Spencer Case (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Adrian Peterson (Perryville, MD/Perryville) was the bow.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday at the Atlantic Collegiate League Sprints regatta in Carlisle, PA.
