12, 2003 LORTON, VA -- The Washington College men's rowing team opened its 2003-04 season today at the Occoquan Chase, held on the Occoquan Reservoir in Lorton, VA. The Shoremen entered two boats in the open four and one boat in the lightweight four. Washington's "A" boat in the open four finished tied with Mary Washington for second among Division III boats, finishing in 17:01. Johns Hopkins's "A" boat finished in 16:31. Sophomore Tom Murray (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) served as coxswain of the open four "A" boat boat. Senior Justin Smith (Yardley, PA/George School) sat stroke, senior Travis Elliott (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) was in the three seat, senior Jonathan Lange (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) was in the two seat, and senior Dwayne Yerger (Naples, FL/The Hill School, PA) was the bow. Washington's "B" boat in the open four finished in 17:38, nine seconds in front of the "B" boat from Johns Hopkins. Senior Nick Mikhalevsky (Arlington, VA/St. Andrew's School, MD) was the coxswain of the open four "B" boat. Sophomore Tyler Raven (Annapolis, MD/Gunston Day School) sat stroke, sophomore Rick Adrian (Baltimore, MD/Towson) was in the three seat, freshman Andrew Bright (Gambrills, MD) was in the two seat, and sophomore Mike Philipp (Newark, DE/Newark) was the bow. In the lightweight four, Washington finished in 17:13, defeating Maryland by 20 seconds. Senior Jennifer Daley (Middleborough, MD/Eastern Technical) was the coxswain of the lightweight four boat. Freshman Adam Askham (Simsbury, CT) sat stroke, senior Greg Smith (Sykesville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was in the three seat, sophomore Kevin Marshall (Silver Spring, MD) was in the two seat, and sophomore Martin Dunphy (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) was the bow. The Shoremen are set to compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA, next Saturday and Sunday. |
