19, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's rowing team won two of four races against Mary Washington in a match race regatta today on the Chester River. Scoring was combined from both the men's and women's races and Washington posted a 47-44 win in the regatta. In the varsity four, Washington cruised to a 2 1/2 boat-length win, finishing in 8:11. Junior Nick Mikhalevsky (Arlington, VA/St. Andrew's School, MD) was the coxswain of WC's varsity four boat. Senior Sean Askham (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) sat stroke, senior John Dolan (Millsboro, DE/St. Andrew's School) was in the three seat, junior Justin Smith (Titusville, NJ/George School) was in the two seat, and junior Travis Elliott (Willow Street, PA) was the bow. Washington's lightweight four rallied from a boat-length down early in its race to come back and win in 7:41.72, edging out Mary Washington by less than two seconds. Junior Jennifer Daley (Baltimore, MD) was the coxswain of the lightweight four boat. Freshman Graham Mellen (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) sat stroke, junior Jonathan Lange (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) was in the three seat, junior Greg Smith (Sykesville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was in the two seat, and junior Brant Whisler (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) was the bow. Mary Washington won the men's varsity eight in 7:41.2, just beating out the Shoremen, who finished in 7:42.5. The Eagles also won the frosh/novice four in 7:59.59, holding off a late charge by Washington, which finished in 8:01.24. The Shoremen will compete at the Atlantic Collegiate Sprints League Regatta in Carlisle, PA, next Saturday. |
