Read Leads #5 Shoremen Past Garnet, 13-6
Senior Scores Four Goals in Span of 4:13 in Third Quarter

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored six goals, including four straight in a span of 4:13 in the third quarter, to lead visiting fifth-ranked Washington College past host Swarthmore, 13-6, in a Centennial Conference game tonight on Clothier Field. The Shoremen improved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the win, while the Garnet fell to 6-5 and 1-5 with the loss.

Swarthmore held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before back-to-back goals by junior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) and Read gave the Shoremen a 3-2 advantage with 5:25 left in the first quarter. Swarthmore knotted the score when Ben Young fired in a goal with 2:40 left in the period, but Washington freshman attackman Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) put Washington ahead, 4-3, when he scored off a feed from junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 1:29 left in the first.

The Garnet scored the first two goals of the second quarter as Stelios Wilson scored at 12:58 and Ivan Ventresca scored off a Will Predun feed at 9:25 to give Swarthmore a 5-4 advantage. Washington quickly regained the lead, however as Herdegen scored off a feed from O'Connor with 8:58 on the clock and junior defenseman Eric Shea (Lutherville, MD/Towson) scored his first career collegiate goal off a pass from senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) 16 seconds later. The 6-5 Washington lead held up through the rest of the second quarter.

The third quarter was all Washington as the Shoremen scored all seven of the goals in the period and held a 17-2 advantage in shots in the quarter. Senior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) gave the Shoremen their first two-goal lead of the game, scoring 26 seconds into the third quarter. O'Connor then found Read for an extra-man goal 21 seconds later to give Washington a 8-5 lead with 14:13 left in the third quarter. Read scored again, this time off a feed from Kirby, with 11:53 left in the third to push the margin to 9-5. Read fired in his third straight goal, this one off an assist from Kielek with 10:36 remaining, and netted his fourth goal in a row just 36 seconds later to make it 11-5. Kielek scored a goal of his own with 4:05 to play off an assist from Read, pushing the margin to 12-5. Kielek netted another goal, this off an acrobatic assist from Kirby on an extra-man opportunity, to increase the lead to 13-5 with 36 seconds on the clock.

Swarthmore's Gavin Musynske scored with 7:44 left in the game to provide the only goal of the fourth quarter.

Read added an assist to go along with his six goals. Kielek added two goals and two assists, while Herdegen had two goals and Kirby had three assists. Six Swarthmore players each scored one goal in the game.

Junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 14 saves in the win for the Shoremen, while Frank Mazzucco made 12 for the Garnet in the loss. Washington held a 41-39 advantage in shots and a 42-21 advantage in ground balls in the game.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson.
