2008 SALISBURY, MD -- Top-ranked host Salisbury University scored the first three goals of the game and kept visiting fourth-ranked Washington College at bay for the duration of the game en route to a 15-11 victory in the annual "War on the Shore" for the Charles B. Clark Cup this afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls improved to 18-0 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 12-2 with the loss. Salisbury struck 42 seconds into the game as Jake DeLillo scored off a feed from Kylor Berkman. Matt Hickman made it 2-0 with a goal with 12:26 left in the first quarter and Mike Von Kamecke provided the Sea Gulls' third goal with 48 seconds later. The Shoremen got on the board with 10:35 left in the opening quarter when junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) fed a cutting senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) for a goal to trim the margin to 3-1. The score remained 3-1 until Salisbury's Greg Titus scored of an assist from Von Kamecke to push the lead back to three goals with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Titus scored again, this time off an assist from Kyle Burto, to make it 5-1 with 2:08 remaining in the quarter. Washington senior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) then scored off an assist from freshman attackman Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 59 seconds remaining to cut it to 5-2 before the end of the period. The Sea Gulls scored quickly in the second quarter as Berkman netted a goal off an assist from Bruce Richardson 27 seconds into the period to make it 6-2. The Shoremen got back within three goals with 13:10 remaining in the second as Kielek scored off a pass from Kirby. Kielek scored again, this time off an assist from senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin), to get the Shoremen to within two at 6-4 with 9:21 to go in the second. DeLillo answered for Salisbury with a goal with 6:15 left, but Read responded for the Shoremen with a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) with 3:45 left to make the score 7-5. Washington held a 23-21 advantage in shots in the first half. Salisbury opened the third-quarter scoring when Richardson fired in a goal off a feed from Berkman with 10:53 left to put the Sea Gulls back up by three goals. Kirby and Kielek hooked up again for the Shoremen as Kirby scored off an assist from Kielek on an extra-man opportunity with 8:38 left in the third, but the Sea Gulls quickly answered as Berkman found Titus for a goal 26 seconds later to make it 9-6. Kirby netted an unassisted goal with 6:32 remaining in the quarter and Sutter scored 57 seconds later to get the Shoremen to within one goal for the first time since the early minutes of the game and trim the lead to 9-8. Von Kamecke denied the Shoremen's bid to tie the game, however, scoring with 4:40 to go to make it 10-8. Von Kamecke scored again, firing in a goal off a pass from Hickman, 27 seconds later to extend the lead back to three goals once again. Washington got back to within two goals before the period ended as Read scored off an assist from Kielek with 44 seconds on the clock to make it 11-9. Washington began the fourth-quarter scoring as junior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) got the Shoremen back to within a goal at 11-10 with 11:05 left. Salisbury answered with back-to-back goals by Richardson with 10:02 and DeLillo, off a an assist from Burto, with 8:54 left to make it 13-10. Senior midfielder Nick Gregory (Riva, MD/South River) scored for the Shoremen with 6:56 to play to cut it to 13-11, but a Richardson goal with 6:07 left and a Hickman goal off a Berkman feed with 2:55 to play clinched the win for the Sea Gulls. Von Kamecke and Richardson each had three goals and one assist for the Sea Gulls, while Titus and DeLillo also scored three goals each. Hickman added two goals and one assist, while Berkman had a goal and four assists. Kirby tallied three goals and one assist and Kielek finished with two goals and three assists to lead the Shoremen. Read added two goals and one assist. Zach Krissoff made 12 saves for the Sea Gulls, while junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 16 stops for the Shoremen. Salisbury finished with a 44-34 advantage in shots in the game. The Shoremen return to action Friday when they take on Haverford in the Centennial Conference Semifinals at Gettysburg College. |
