2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Second-ranked Gettysburg College scored with eight seconds left in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead into halftime and open a six-goal run en route to a 17-10 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory over third-ranked host Washington College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Bullets (9-1, 4-0 Centennial) took over sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference by handing the Shoremen (9-1, 4-1) their first loss of the season. Washington jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the game, scoring their first three shots of the contest. Senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored the third of those goals off an assists from senior attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) just 2:22 into the game. The Bullets regrouped to score the next three goals to tie the score on a Kyle McGrath goal with 5:55 left in the first quarter. The two teams traded goals at the end of the period to go into the second quarter deadlocked at 4-4. The Bullets took their first lead of the game when Jared Harriman scored off a feed from Chris Cahill with 10:21 left in the second quarter, but Washington tied things up on a goal by senior midfielder Nick Gregory (Riva, MD/South River) with 7:33 left in the period. The two teams traded goals again for a 6-6 tie before Joe Brody fired in a goal with eight seconds left in the half to give the Bullets the 7-6 advantage at the midway point. Gettysburg took command of the game in the third quarter, scoring all four of that period's goals to go up, 11-6, when Ben Sufrin scored off an assist from Drew Duckworth with 6:39 left. The Bullets outshot the Shoremen 29-8 over the second and third quarters of the game. Gettysburg scored its sixth unanswered goal 50 seconds into the fourth quarter when Brody scored off a feed from Zach Pucci to make it 12-6. Washington ended the run and mounted a rally by scoring three of the next four goals, cutting the lead to 13-9 when junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) found senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) for an extra-man goal with 9:59 remaining. The Bullets ended the comeback attempt, however, by scoring four goals in a span of 4:17 to open up a 17-9 advantage on a Sufrin goal with 3:14 to play. Gregory rounded out the scoring with a goal with 2:22 remaining. Brody finished with a game-high five goals for the Bullets, while Sufrin had three goals and one assist and Harriman had three goals of his own. McGrath added two goals, while Duckworth and Tom O'Donnell each had one goal and two assists and Pucci tallied three assists. Gregory and Kirby each scored three goals for the Shoremen, while Read tallied one goal and three assists. Read's third assist was the 200th point of his career. The Bullets held a 48-36 advantage in shots in the game and won 16 of the game's 31 face-offs, including an 11-for-16 performance in the second half. Zachary Furshman made nine saves in goal for the Bullets, while junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 14 stops for the Shoremen. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore. |
