Men's Lacrosse Coaching Staff

Head Coach:
J.B. Clarke

JB Clarke was hired as the head coach of the Shoremen lacrosse team in July of 1998. He has compiled a 111-42 record a Washington through seven seasons and has led the Shoremen into the NCAA Division III Tournament six times. He reached 100 wins at WC in fewer games than any previous Shoremen head coach.

In 2003, Clarke led the Shoremen to an unbeaten Centennial Conference record and their first conference championship since 1997. In 2004, Clarke again led the Shoremen to an unbeaten regular season Centennial Conference record and guided the Shoremen to a school-record 18 wins and their first berth in the NCAA Division III Semifinals in since 1998.

Clarke came to Chestertown from Division I Loyola College in Baltimore. With Clarke on the staff, the Greyhounds finished the 1998 season ranked number two in the nation in NCAA Division I. At Loyola, Clarke served as the team's offensive coordinator, a role he also played as an assistant at Duke University and Roanoke College.

Before his position at Loyola in 1998, Clarke served as the head lacrosse coach at Greensboro College in North Carolina in 1997. In just one season, he turned a 3-9 record from the previous year into a 9-5 mark and a Top 20 Division III national ranking.

Clarke's first college coaching stop was at Ohio State University as an assistant, and then on to Roanoke, where he had played as an undergraduate. After a year as an assistant at Roanoke, Clarke moved on to Duke University, where he worked for four years as the offensive coordinator.

Greensboro College offered him the head coaching position in 1996. While working his magic there in the Spring of 1997, he drew the attention of the people at Loyola, and was hired as an assistant there for the 1998 season.

In his 21 years in coaching, including five years at the high school level, teams with which Clarke has been involved have won 287 games and lost only 93.

Senior Assistant Coach/
Offensive Coordinator:
Matt Parks

Matt Parks was named senior assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Washington College during the summer of 2007.

Parks comes to Washington from Fallston High School in Maryland where he spent eight seasons (2000-2007) as head coach. Parks posted a head coaching record of 105-33 at Fallston and was named the Harford County Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2007. He guided his team to the 2001 3A-2A state championship as well as a state runner-up finish in 2007 and a state semifinalist finish in 2002. Under Parks, Fallston won three regional championships and five Harford County Championships. Prior to serving as head coach, Parks spent two years as the assistant varsity coach and offensive coordinator for Fallston.

Parks played collegiate lacrosse for the University of Maryland and was selected for the 1994 Division I North-South Senior All-Star Game. Parks led the Terrapins in goals scored as both a junior and senior and appeared in every game for Maryland from 1991-1994. He twice earned ACC Player of the Week honors and was presented with the Van Trump Truit award in 1994 as Maryland's Outstanding Attackman. Parks was a member of the Terps' 1991 NCAA Division I semifinalist team.

Parks, who also spent two years as the offensive and defensive line coach for Fallston's football team, earned a B.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice in the fall of 1995.

Assistant Coach/
Recruiting Coordinator:
Kyle Mitten

Kyle Mitten is in his second season as an assistant coach at Washington College. Mitten lettered three times and earned All-American honors three times at WC after transferring to the school from UMASS.

Mitten was named a first team All-American at Washington as a junior in 2004 and a second-team All-American as a sophomore in 2003 and as a senior in 2005. He also earned first team All-Centennial Conference honors three years in a row in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Mitten helped lead the 2003 team to a Centennial Conference Championship and helped lead the 2004 team to a school-record 18 wins and a berth in the NCAA Division III Semifinals.

Mitten scooped up 103 ground balls in three seasons at Washington College and also scored four goals, including a 2003 game-winner Gettysburg and a 2005 game-winner against Hampden-Sydney, and recorded one career assist. He was named a North/South Senior All-Star in 2005.

Mitten graduated from Washington College in 2005.

Assistant Coach:
Stephen Berger

Major League Lacrosse All-Star and three-time All-American Stephen Berger returns to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach for 2008. Berger previously served as an assistant coach at Washington during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Berger was drafted by the MLL's Long Island Lizards in 2004 and earned a spot in the MLL's All-Star game for the first time in 2007. In three years with the Lizards, Berger has scored 62 goals and assisted on 16 others.

Berger polished off a stellar collegiate career at Washington in 2004, scoring a school-record 94 points on 53 goals and 41 assists. He was named the 2004 Co-Midfielder of the Year for Division III. He was also named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, was recognized as a first team All-American for the second straight season and as an All-American for the third year in a row. Berger totaled 135 goals, 106 assists, 241 points, and 276 ground balls in four years at WC.

In January 2008, Berger played with the U.S. National Team at the Champions Challenge Weekend.


Assistant Coach:
Justin Berry

Justin Berry returns for his third year as an assistant coach at Washington College following a one-year hiatus. Berry is a 2001 graduate of Towson University.

At Towson, Berry captained the Tigers to their first NCAA Semifinals appearance in a decade. Berry is Towson's all-time leader in career face-off wins with 460, including 257 in his senior season. Berry, who earned All-American honors as a senior, was also named the "best face-off man in college lacrosse" by Inside Lacrosse magazine. After finishing his senior season at Towson University, Berry played for the New Jersey Pride for two seasons.
