8, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD Visiting Muhlenberg College held off two second-half rallies by host Washington College to post a 77-71 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Mules improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-6 and 0-4. The score was tied at 20-20 with 7:54 to play in the first half before the Mules went on a 16-5 run to surge ahead, 36-25, on a lay-up by Peter Barnes with 2:19 to go before halftime. Muhlenberg carried a 40-30 lead into halftime. A lay-up by Ryan Foster with 17:57 to go in the game put the Mules up, 45-32, but the Shoremen then went on a 14-2 run to trim the lead to 47-46 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) with 13:04 remaining. The Mules answered with a 11-2 run of their own to push the lead to 58-48 on a lay-up by Brian Frankoski with 9:48 remaining. Muhlenberg held a 68-58 lead with 4:45 left before Washington went on its second big run of the half, scoring 10 of the next 12 points to cut the lead to 70-68 on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) with 2:39 remaining. Washington got the ball back down three points (71-68) and junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) went to the line for a pair of free throws with 1:44 remaining. Kohlrus made the second of those two attempts to make it 71-69, but back-to-back jumpers by Darrell Roth and Mike Bernardini with 1:19 and 39 seconds remaining, respectively, thwarted the Shoremen's comeback attempt. Frankoski led the Mules with 15 points and eight rebounds. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Roth added 12 points, while Greg Pask tallied 11 points and eight boards and Foster finished with 10 points. Bernardini contributed nine points and a game-high five assists. Chambers led all scorers with 17 points for the Shoremen. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists, and swiped four steals. Kohlrus tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kines added 12 points of his own. Muhlenberg shot 48% from the field to Washington's 35% and held a 48-36 advantage on the boards. The Shoremen are idle until December 18th, when they travel to Wesley College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game. |
