2, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD Four Gettysburg players scored in double figures to lead the visiting Bullets to a 78-60 win over host Washington College this afternoon in Centennial Conference men's basketball action at the Cain Athletic Center. The Bullets improve to 15-3 overall and 10-2 in conference play, while the Shoremen fall to 4-15 and 1-11 respectively. Washington jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first 6:02 of the first half. The spurt was capped off on a layup by sophomore forward James Whall (Freehold, NJ/Freehold). The Bullets answered with a 16-7 run to take a 20-19 lead with 7:50 left in the opening half on a Joe Spierenburg layup. After the Shoremen briefly regained the lead at 21-20, Gettysburg's Dan Capkin drained a three-point basket to spark an 18-6 run to close the half and give the visitors a 38-27 lead at intermission. The Shoremen opened the second half on a 16-7 run to close the gap to 45-43 with 13:46 remaining on a tip-in by sophomore guard Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson). Gettysburg would answer with an 11-2 run over the next 5:08 to take a 56-45 lead with 8:38 remaining on a pair of Spierenburg free throws. The Shoremen would never draw closer than seven points the rest of the way and the Bullets would lead by as many as 20 in the final minute. Corey Dorsey had a team-best 16 points to lead the Bullets. Andrew Powers had a double-double with 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds, while Capkin had 13 points. Spierenburg, who ranks second in Division III in blocked shots, blocked a game-high six shots and added 10 points. For the Shoremen, Kines scored a career-best 16 points, while junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA./W.T. Woodson) led all players with 19 points. Sophomore guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) had 12 points and a game-high four steals. The Bullets shot 60% for the game, while holding the Shoremen to 28% from the floor. Gettysburg netted all 14 fast-break points in the contest and outscored Washington in the paint, 42-32. The Shoremen netted more second chance points, 17-5, and points off of turnovers, 25-20. Gettysburg edged Washington on the glass by a 38-31 margin. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with an 7:30 p.m. Centennial Conference road tilt at Ursinus. |
