2008 COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Host Ursinus College swept visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Ursinus. The Bears won game one, 5-4, in eight innings and took game two by a 13-2 margin. The Bears are now 16-11 overall and 8-8 in conference, while the Shoremen fall to 7-18 and 3-13 respectively. In game one, Ursinus jumped out to a 4-1 lead after six innings. Washington loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and with zero outs and junior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) launched a three-run triple to even the score at 4-4. The Shoremen had a chance to take the lead in the seventh, but Tozzolo was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. In the bottom of the eighth the hosts loaded the bases with one out. The Bears pushed the game-winning run across when Scott Young plated David Randolph on a bases loaded walk-off walk. For Ursinus, Mike Ziemak went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win. Bears' pitcher Ryan Schmidt picked up the victory in relief and improves to 4-0. For Washington, Tozzolo was 3-for-4 with all four RBI for the visitors. Freshman Harry Woods (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) took the loss and falls to 0-2. In the second game, Washington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) scored on an error. The Bears responded with three runs to taka 3-1 lead after one. Ursinus scored all of its runs in the first on two Washington errors. The Bears scored one run each in the third, fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead. Washington cut the Ursinus lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth when senior Kirk Hines (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) walked with the bases loaded to plate senior Wes Anderson (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville). Ursinus regained the four run lead in the bottom of fifth to make it 6-2. Ursinus broke open the game with a seven run sixth inning to make it 13-2. Highlighting the inning were two two-run hits by Randolph and Young. Luis Serrano picked up the win and improves to 3-3 on the season for Ursinus. At the plate for the Bears, Randolph and Young had two hits and four RBI each, while Brendon Evans went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Dan DeMarco (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) took the loss and falls to 0-3. Tidwell and junior Chris O'Donovan (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) each had two hits. The Shoremen return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference road game at Catholic. |
