2008 SWARTHMORE, PA - Host Swarthmore College earned a split in the season series with visiting Washington College by pounding out 21 hits en route to a 15-3 Centennial Conference baseball win over the Shoremen this afternoon. With the win, the Garnet (7-6, 1-1 Centennial) avenged an 8-2 loss to the Shoremen (5-6, 1-1) in Chestertown on Tuesday. Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before breaking the game open with seven runs in the second inning and four more in the third. The Garnet added one run each in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings. Washington scored once in each of the final three innings of the game. Scott Dalane went 6-for-6 with a double, two stolen bases, three RBI, and four runs scored for the Garnet. Conor Casey was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Ben Scheiderman was 3-for-6 with two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Neil Mejia got the win for Swarthmore, allowing no runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in six innings of work. Senior outfielder James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Washington, raising his team-leading batting average to .463. Junior second baseman Doug Lutz (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) singled, walked, and scored two runs. Junior designated hitter Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) doubled to lead off the eighth inning and later scored. The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home double-header against Gettysburg. |
