2008 SALISBURY, MD - Twenty-sixth ranked host Salisbury University used a pair of big innings to down visiting Washington College, 8-2, in a non-conference baseball game this afternoon in Salisbury, MD. The Sea Gulls improved to 6-1 with the win, while the Shoremen dropped their season opener. Salisbury jumped out to an early lead by plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but a two-run single in the top of third by Washington junior catcher Rob Rifkin (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) that drove in junior second baseman Doug Lutz (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and junior designated hitter Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) trimmed the lead to 3-2. The Sea Gulls tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, however, to extend their lead to 7-2 and added the game's final run in the seventh. Andrew Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored, and two doubles for the Sea Gulls. Jordan Crystal also knocked in two runs and scored another for Salisbury. Sophomore third baseman Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) was 2-for-4 in the loss for the Shoremen. Washington returns to action Tuesday with a 12:00 p.m. double-header at Neumann. |
