March 12,
2008 COCOA, FL - Sam Ackerman struck out 12 batters in seven and one-third innings of work to lead the Oneonta State baseball team to a 9-1 win over Washington College today at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL. The Red Dragons improved to 3-3 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-3 with the loss. Oneonta jumped on top early, plating four runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single, a fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch. Two errors helped extend the inning as just one of the four runs was earned. The Red Dragons added another run in the top of the third inning on a home run by Peter Lindner and tacked on their sixth run on an RBI single by Lindner in the fourth. The score remained 6-0 until the Red Dragons tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning. Washington got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. The Shoremen loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter before freshman Mike Forgash, Jr. (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-1. Ackerman allowed one run and just one hit - a sixth-inning pinch-hit single by junior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) - and walked six batters en route to picking up the victory. Bill Putman pitched the remainder of the game for the Red Dragons, allowing one walk and one hit - a two-out ground-rule double by Washington junior second baseman Ben Kaplan (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lindner finished the game 4-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored for Oneonta State. Brian Holmes went 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. The Shoremen will play St. Mary's (MD) tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at the Cocoa Expo. |
