Washington Bangs Out 27 Hits in Victory

COCOA, FL - The Washington College baseball team recorded 27 hits in a 22-5 win over Norwich University this afternoon in Cocoa, FL. The 22 runs for the Shoremen (2-2) represent the most they have scored in a game since a 24-5 victory over Lincoln on March 19th, 2001. Washington has now scored 37 runs on 86 hits in its past two games.

Washington's five-run third inning and six-run seventh inning accounted for half of the Shoremen's 22 runs. Senior outfielder James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the win, while junior shortstop Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. Junior catchers Rob Rifkin (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) and Jim Bannar (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) combined to go 5-for-6. Rifkin was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Bannar was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman pitcher A.J. Hill (Duluth, MN/Lakeside, GA) got the win for the Shoremen in his collegiate debut. Hill allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four batters in five innings of work. Freshman Jonathan Decker (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) pitched the next three innings, allowing two runs, while sophomore Benjy Duke (Elizabeth, CO/Denver Academy) pitched the ninth inning and allowed one run.

The Shoremen will play Oneonta State tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at the Cocoa Expo.
