Mules Take Both Games From Shoremen
Boucher Tallies Two Hits In Games One and Two

ALLENTOWN, PA - Host Muhlenberg College swept a Centennial Conference baseball double-header from visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Cedarcreek Field. The Mules won the first game, 4-3, and took the second game, 5-3. The Mules, who clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament, improved to 20-17 overall and 11-7 in conference play with the wins, while the Shoremen fell to 7-21 and 3-15. Both teams concluded their conference schedules in this twinbill.

In game one, Muhlenberg scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to give hosts a 3-0 lead. Bobby Spindler drove in Edward Risener on a sacrifice fly to give the Mules a 1-0 lead. Muhlenberg took a 3-0 lead on a single by Joseph DiCecilia that plated Joe Carlo to make it 2-0 and then on the same play, Dan Fisher scored on a Shoremen error to make it 3-0.

Washington scored three in the top of fifth to even the score. Senior Wes Anderson (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) doubled in junior Ben Kaplan (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) to cut the Mules' lead to 3-1. Junior Rob Rifkin (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard) and trimmed the deficit to 3-2. The Shoremen evened the game at 3-3 when senior James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) singled home Anderson.

Muhlenberg scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth with a one out home run by Christian Conti.

Phil Cresta picked up the victory for Muhlenberg and improves to 8-2. He went the distance, striking out seven. For Washington, freshman Harry Woods (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) tossed a complete game, but takes the loss and falls to 0-3. He struck out six batters in the contest. At the plate, sophomore Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) was the lone player on either team to tally more than one hit, going 2-for-3.

In game two, Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Boucher single that scored Tidwell. Muhlenberg evened the score in the bottom of the second on a Fisher sacrifice fly that plated John Kalis. The guests took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice by Tidwell that scored senior Tyler Corbutt (Bethesda, MD/Good Counsel).

The Mules took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third. Conti drove in Eric Hammond on a single to knot it up at 2-2. Muhlenberg took the lead for good on a two-run, two out double by Carlo that sent Kalis and Conti home and gave the Mules a 4-2 lead.

Washington cut the Muhlenberg lead to 4-3 when Corbutt drove in Anderson on a RBI single in the top of the fourth. The Mules completed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Conti tripled in Eric Pomroy. Washington got two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but left both runners stranded.

Matthew Ordog picks up the win in game two for the Mules and is now 6-2. Joseph Barrese picked up his fourth save of the season, tossing the final three innings in relief of Ordog. Conti went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, while Kalis was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. For the Shoremen, sophomore Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) took the loss and falls to 1-3. Boucher, Corbutt and senior Kirk Hines (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) each had two hits.

The Shoremen will complete their 2008 campaign against St. Mary's (MD) tomorrow at 1 p.m.
