2008 BALTIMORE, MD - Eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins downed visiting Washington College, 27-4, on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action at JHU Baseball Field. The Blue Jays improved to 24-4 overall and 12-1 in conference play with the victory, while the Shoremen fell to 6-16 and 2-11 respectively. The Blue Jays scored four in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Johns Hopkins scored its runs on a double steal, an RBI double, an RBI single and an RBI groundout. The Shoremen cut the Hopkins lead to 4-1 in the top of the third when junior Ben Kaplan (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) drove in senior Kirk Hines (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) on an RBI groundout. The hosts scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to make it 11-1. Lee Bolyard highlighted the inning with an RBI double. The Blue Jays scored six in the fourth to make it 17-1 and two in the fifth to make it 19-1. Washington got three in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) and a throwing error by the Blue Jays that scored a pair of runs to cut the Hopkins lead to 19-4. The hosts added two runs in the bottom half of the inning and six more in the eighth. For Hopkins, Todd Emr went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Lee Bolyard was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. The Blue Jays pounded out 24 hits in the game. Dave Fioretti picks up the win and improves to 1-0. For Washington, Kaplan had a run scored and an RBI and Hines reached base on three occasions. On the mound, freshman A.J. Hill (Duluth, MN/Lakeside (GA) took the loss and falls to 1-2. The Shoremen return home to host McDaniel this Friday at 3:30 p.m. in conference action. |
