Fords Take Two From Shoremen
Corbutt and Coveney Each A Hit Home Run For WC

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Haverford College swept a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader over host Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Athey Field. The Fords captured the opener, 7-1, and won the nightcap, 19-8. The Fords improve to 20-8-1 overall and 8-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fall to 5-13 and 1-8 respectively.

In the opener, Haverford's Drew Wilcox snapped a 0-0 tie in the top of the third inning with a grand slam home run to left field to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Wilcox made it 6-0 in the top of the fifth with a two-run single to right field. Louis DeRosa made it 7-0 Fords in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Washington got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by junior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) that scored senior James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington).

For the Fords in game one, Wilcox was 2-for-4 with six RBI, while Dean Laganosky and Jake Kaden each crossed home plate twice. On the mound, Donny Poster tallied the win for Haverford and is now 3-2 in 2008. He went 5 2/3 innings, scattering three hits, allowing one run and struck out seven. Junior Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard) took the loss and falls to 0-2. He allowed six runs, but just two earned in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and fanned three.

In the second game, Washington led 2-1 before Haverford exploded for 12 runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 13-2 lead. Bobby Bailey put the Fords up for good at 3-2 scoring on a Shoremen fielding error. Haverford was leading 4-2 when they scored on back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 6-2. The inning was capped by a two run home run by Chris Dooley. Also getting two RBI hits for the visitors in the frame was Bailey and Robbie Crabtree.

Washington scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Coveney to left field to cut the Haverford lead to 13-6. It was Coveney's first career home run. With the Fords leading 16-7 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Tyler Corbutt (Bethesda, MD/Good Counsel) launched his first career home run, a solo blast to left field. It was the Shoremen's first two home run game since March 14, 2006 against Mayville State when Eric Guettermann and Will Greenberg went yard.

For the Fords in game two, Dooley went 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Bailey and Crabtree each scored three times and knocked in two. Wilcox and Laganosky both scored twice. For the Shoremen in the nightcap, Tidwell, Coveney, junior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) and sophomore Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) each had two hits, with Coveney driving in three. Boucher, Corbutt and Tidwell each crossed the plate twice.

Haverford's Jason Miller picked up the victory in relief and improves to 2-0 on the season. Junior Dan DeMarco (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) took the loss for Washington and falls to 0-2.

The opener was interrupted by two rain delays totaling 88 minutes and the second game was called in the top of the ninth due to darkness.

Washington returns to action tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. home twinbill against Centennial Conference rival Dickinson.
