2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Franklin & Marshall had five players tally multiple hits as the Diplomats scored a 15-4 win over host Washington College on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action at Athey Field. The Diplomats improved to 12-10 overall and 7-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 5-10 and 1-5 respectively with the loss. The Diplomats got one run each in the top of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Jason Anderson drove in Shea Moriarty on a single through the left side in the first inning and Moriarty scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Patrick O'Reilly in the third. The visitors broke the game open with a four run fourth and three run fifth. Anderson capped the fourth inning with a two-run single to make it 6-0. In the fifth, Andrew Hanson had an RBI single with the infield drawn in to highlight the three run rally and make it 9-0. Washington used to a three run bottom of the sixth to cut the F&M lead to 9-3. Junior Jim Bannar (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) drove in the first run on a bases loaded walk to plate sophomore Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton). The next batter, junior Ben Kaplan laced a single down the left field line to drive in junior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) and sophomore Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson). The Diplomats netted four runs in the top of the seventh to make it 13-3. Eric Borstein and Nick Rolnick had a two-run hits each for the guests. The Shoremen scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Coveney that scored Boucher to make it 13-4. F&M scored two in the top of the eighth to provide the final margin. Hanson went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI to highlight a 17-hit barrage by F&M. Moriarity and Gordon Pellegrini each had three runs scored and two hits for the Diplomats. Anderson was 2-for-2 and knocked in three runs, while Borstein was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the visitors. For Washington, Boucher, Coveney and Kaplan each had two hits. Kaplan drove in two runs, while Coveney scored twice. The Shoremen pounded out 11 hits in the game. Dan Tischler tallied the victory for the Diplomats and improves to 3-3. He struck out five in seven innings of work. Sophomore Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the loss for the hosts and falls to 2-4. The Shoremen head to Franklin & Marshall Friday for a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference tilt to complete the two-game series in Lancaster, PA. |
